FAB 40s

As a young woman, I gain so much inspiration from the Nigerian women who have paved the way. Not only are they successful in their chosen careers, they manage to successfully balance it with family life.
The big 4-0 is the arguably the most revered age for women – I know some of my friends in their twenties have already started dreading this milestone.
These women in various stages of their 40s show that there is no need to fret, instead there is a lot to look forward to.
Here are the FAB 40s

Nike Ogunlesi
Adenike Ogunlesi changed the clothing business in Nigeria. From a tiny shop with her and her mother as the main staff, Nike turned Ruff ‘n’ Tumble into an instantly recognizable brand. When banks wouldn’t loan her money to expand her business, she turned to family for support and they never regretted their decision to invest in Ruff ‘n’ Tumble. Nike turned a 150,000 naira initial investment into a multi-million naira business.
Despite her many commitments as a CEO, wife and mother, she makes a strong effort to share knowledge with young entrepreneurs. She featured in the Africa Open for Business documentary and was recognized as the FATE Foundation Model Entrepreneur in 2005. Nike is an excellent role model for young women who want to pursue the business of fashion.

Mo Abudu
Five years ago, the name Mosunmola Dominique Abudu would probably have elicited blank stares from most Nigerians but not anymore. In a few short years, Mo has made a very strong mark in the Nigerian business landscape. Bold and future-focused, she is the Founder and CEO/MD of Vic Lawrence & Associates, one of the most successful indigenous consulting firms in Nigeria. She has taken several steps to set a good example for other Nigerian businesses such as inviting new partners into her firm (very rare for indigenous Nigerian businesses). She was also one of the brains behind the Protea Hotel Oakwood Park and is on the Junior Achievement Nigeria Board. Mo who is married with two children is a great role model for any women hoping to enter the corporate world in Nigeria.

Ify Ighodalo
Ifeyinwa Ighodalo entered the limelight when she won the St Moritz Most Stylish Woman award. She was one of the people who were rocking Ankara before it became the new ‘it’ fabric. Ify is definitely not all about beauty and style. In her year, she was one of the best graduating students from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she studied Accounting and along with her business partner, Moni Fagbemi has run an extremely successful furniture and interior design company called Design Options for over a decade. She is very involved in various non-profit and developmental initiatives and is one of the founders of Wimbiz, an organization that supports and encourages women in business.
She is married to Asue Ighodalo and has a daughter. For young women with entrepreneurial ambitions, Ify is a really great role model.

These women in their 40s who exemplify FABNESS.
To the akara seller in her 40s struggling to send her children to school, the 40-year old single mother whose daughter finally graduated from university, the woman approaching 40 who is scared because she hasn’t had a child yet, the 45 year old woman who after years of hard work has finally broken the glass ceiling…this is dedicated to YOU. This is dedicated to our mothers.

I’ll be doing more features on a wide variety of people on bellanaija in the future. So watch out…let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions for future features…

Have a great week!!!!!
We luv to read your comments so please let us know what u think!

There has been another plane crash in Nigeria.
Today, an ADC plane leaving Abuja for Sokoto with over 100 people including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammadu Maccido, one of his sons, Senator Badamasi Maccido and his grandson crashed soon after take-off.
An entire family was wiped out as Senator Gandi, his mother, wife, three kids died in the crash.
One other family lost 4 children.
I don't even know what to say because I am shaking right now.
I am so angry. I believe the airline, aviation authorities etc.. should all be ashamed of themselves. Yes, air accidents happen but ours is becoming way too much. Many people were not even shocked. Is this the type of thing we should be getting used to? All reports indicate that rescue efforts were poor as usual. Its a damn shame.
Why? Again?
I really sympathise with the families and also those whose family members and friends were victims of all the previous air disasters because this will surely open some sore wounds and bring back some devastating memories.

May their souls rest in peace. Here is the Manifest.
Reports say there are 7 survivors including 3 daughters of the Kogi State governor. I thank God for their lives.
You can go to CNN or BBC for up to the minute details.

The Roundup
29 Year Old South African Legend, Lebo Mathosa passed away this week. She was killed in a tragic car accident. She was known for her bold vivacious nature....She really broke a lot of boundaries for female musicians in Africa and will be remembered for her vibrant personality and groundbreaking career! May her soul rest in perfect peace.

A memorial service was held mark the 1st anniversary of the passing of First Lady, Stella Obasanjo. Her son Muyiwa Obasanjo and his wife Imelse were at the event. I can't believe its been a year already.

Anita Hogan, the Nigerian actress and former reality star got married to her fiance. If you remember Anita and her boyfriend were embarrassed by a huge scandal when their nude photos were published on the internet and in some newspapers.

One of Nigeria's foremost fashion and beauty photographers, Yetunde Ayeni (she shot this fab photoshoot - see here) tied the knot with her media/advertising executive fiance, Steve Baba Eko. The couple had what has been dubbed as Nigeria's first beachfront wedding. They arrived at the spectacular La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort in Ibeju-Lekki via a Caverton helicopter. Congrats to the couple!

Madonna rocked an ankara outfit while clarifying her adoption saga on Oprah. Fab!

Thanks to Uzo for reminding me about this!
Umoja is coming to Nigeria.....the famous South African theatre production is finally here. I actually saw it in London some years ago...it was SPECTACULAR! Click on the official flyer for more information.

AUNTY BELLA - MS.WAHALA

Aunty Bella is here again.
It’s been a while since the last case; I sincerely thank everyone for all their comments and contribution so far! You may be surprised to know that you have actually made a difference in someone’s life. Read the post below for updates from past cases...HERE

Please take time out to read today’s case from Ms. Wahala…it is a very true story and she is honestly confused so please help her out!

Aunty B,
Absolutely love your blog. I have read every Aunty B. letter and never imagined I would write to you but desperate times call for desperate measures.
A little background info is important before I describe my wahala. I am a Muslim in my very early 20s from Lagos. I am from a fairly well-known family. Dad's a politician and my mother's side is pretty out there. I grew up outside Lagos and went to a very proper all-girls school and have lived and schooled in the US the last 7 years. I have a very decent job, have 2 degrees and am currently working on my MBA. I have a fairly Western and very liberal view of life. Definitely not a traditional naija girl.
My parents have been married for a minute and my dad has cheated on my mum from day one so I decided pretty early that my priorities when picking a husband would emphasize respect, honour and fidelity. My Western views make me very indifferent to the standard naija, "what will people say reaction" that most naija people seem to have. Therein seems to lie my problem.
I am seriously dating a wonderful man with a very reliable source of income and an incredible business sense after kissing a few frogs.
It's been a year and a half and he loves me more than I imagined possible and treats me with respect. He is also Yoruba but Christian and almost a decade older. He is by no means perfect but I love him that much more in spite of and becauseof his flaws. We have talked about marriage and I know he's planning a proposal so i figured I would introduce him formally to my parents.
Na there katakata burst. He has no university degree and my parents are swearing up and down – NO. He is very polished and well travelled. He made a decision not to finish school and it's worked out very well for him. My parents believe the differences in our educational backgrounds will create serious problems. I say we have worked through a lot of those problems and will work through whatever comes up. We expect criticism and judgment and are prepared for that. They say he will revert to the standard naija illiterate way of thinking. It doesn't help that he is from one of those Ara-Oke Yoruba states that the rest of them dislike. I say my parents are simply worried about how it would look. Their very educated first child, a complete daddy's girl, marrying some "Off the street illiterate trying to boost his profile by marrying a degree holder" (their words) is unacceptable. Ki ni aye ma so? What do you say?

What do you suggest?
It seems trivial but many of us are very close to our parents and will not like to destroy that relationship for a guy. But what if he is ‘the one’…

Anyway, let us know what you think…

AUNTY BELLA UPDATES

Miss Frontin’ Don’t Pay – Has moved on, she is now ‘just friends’ with the fine boy and he recently confessed that he really liked her but it faded due to her childish ways…
Ms. Papa Don’t Preach – Is going ahead with her wedding. It’s taking place in the UK before the end of the year. Initially she was going to just go to the registry/court but has decided to something bigger and more glam because in her own words, ‘Its her special day and she has nothing to be ashamed of’. For now, only her mum is scheduled to attend, her dad still refuses to acknowledge the wedding.
Mr.Torn – Has decided to continue dating his Boston chick and wants to ‘see how it goes’…he says he will tell his Nigerian fiancĂ© soon but is still searching for ‘the words to use’ but if he and the Boston chick break-up soon, he will go back to the Nigerian babe…the guy is not serious!

This just made a laugh so much! I was browsing through the collections shown at Paris Fashion Week which took place about a week ago.
So I was lookin through the Louis Vuitton Spring 2007 Ready-to-Wear collection and what did I see? Many bags featured were ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags…u know them now…lol…don’t front!

SURVIVOR

I was going to write about something completely different today but a comment someone left yesterday really struck me. I guess it was just a sign that I should highlight something very important.

Kehinde Gbelee is a prominent Nigerian banker and breast cancer survivor; she was one of the key people who inspired the Genevieve Pink Ball.

Michelle Dede was the presenter of extremely popular, Big Brother Nigeria reality show.
She recently revealed that she faced a cervical cancer scare. Fortunately, it was detected early.

So ladies, perform that monthly breast self examination. If you feel or see anything suspicious, please consult your doctor immediately. Early detection is key!
You should also ensure that you see your doctor for your yearly pap smear exam (dont be scared, shy or ashamed) If Michelle did not go for hers, we would be hearing a different sob story now…

Don’t ignore this because it is a sort of ‘serious’ topic……entertainers, celebrities and socialites worldwide host various fab and glam benefits yearly to raise money for these causes… Also, thanks to Genevieve Magazine for highlighting such vital issues.
Much luv and God’s blessings to those presently battling, all the survivors and those who have passed away.
A close relative is presently battling breast cancer, I sincerely hope and pray that noone else in my family goes through this again. AMEN

Please share your input on this issue.

~INDEPENDENCE~

Hey Everyone,
Happy Independence Day in arrears!!!!!
Soooo what did u guys get up to?
Let me give you my gist. See I haven’t gone out in ages!!!!! I cannot even believe it! Once upon a time it was a very different story…lol
Anyways, on Friday, I was supposed to go for this lil’ shindig with my friend, Miss M. I was sooooo exhausted but I still managed to drag myself up to get ready…
After applying the MAC and things....I wore the outfit and just sat down waiting….I was still a lil’ tired so I carefully decided to take a nap….anyways…long story short…I fell sleep and didn’t wake up till 11.30AM on Saturday…the other side of the story is my friend, Miss M didn’t call sooooo she stood me up! Even if I had been awake she would have been a ‘No-Show’!.....imagine…lol…its all good tho…
So what did I do on Independence Day? I went to church and did some serious prayers for Nigeria….lol…seriously tht’s what that country needs!
Anyway, let’s get down to our usual ‘bellanaijaing’

*************************************************************************************
Did anyone get a chance to watch the Miss Word 2006 pageant on Saturday?
I didn’t! Well, just to fill you in, Miss Nigeria, Abiola Bashorun didn’t win the competition. She didn’t win the ‘Miss World Africa’ crown either, that went to Miss Angola - Stiviandra Oliveira. Miss Ghana - Lamisi Mbillah won the ‘Beauty With A Purpose Award’ for her passionate charity work in Ghana focused on eradicating iodine deficiency and Guinea Worm.
Here are some of Abiola’s pics from during the pageant.
You can also watch her video profile HERE and see my previous feature on her HERE.

Let us know how ur weekend went and what you think about the Miss World pageant.
To all of you in Nigeria that get to stay home today…make sure u enjoy it! Ciao
