SA FASHION UPDATE

Hey Everyone,
Sorry for being MIA…
Wow…I had an interesting weekend…
Where do I start?
Well, I woke up on Saturday to discover that my internet wasn’t working…did all the usual, plugging and unplugging by nothing seemed to work…called the ISP and they said the problem is from them and they wont be able to send a techie until next week…what??? I have no comments really.
Went shopping during the rest of the day…
I actually went out on Saturday night, I literally had to be dragged out of my my house (the culprits know themselves) but I ended up having loads of fun! Good times…
Sunday, saw ‘Last King of Scotland’…it’s a really great movie.
Ohhhh, and Sunday night, the ‘lad’ calls me and is like ‘U have a secret’…I was like ‘woooot’….well he found my blog! And he read it and he was like ‘its definitely u…when I was reading it, it sounded like I was talking to you!’ Damnnnn, I’ve been nabbed…
Meanwhile, one of my very best friends got engaged, when he told me he was like ‘I hope u don’t don’t blog about it!’….well, I’ve blogged about it! LOL…Congrats!
So moving on…U know I love my South African fashion….the SA designers NEVER disappoint me! My fave is Stoned Cherrie….I am so glad that she is now involved with the UN CatWalk the World – Fashion For Food as well…

  16. Those are beautiful creations. I think SA designers are ahead of Nigerian designers but with pros like Deola Sagoe growing strong, I am sure with time, we will give them a run for their money.

  19. SA fashion industry is way better than Naija's.There is more interaction with other world's of fashion than Naija's. Naija's are linking up to SA while SA is linking up to the world. Nigerian models run to SA because there is more exposure, and more importantly, better pay there.
But needless to say, we are getting there, and we do have FAB designers.

Bella, passionate about this topic. Make I yarn biko.

SA = Cutting edge, evolving, committed to training tomorrow's South African fashion professionals. They liason with the local and national govt. on "branding SA" with their "Proudly South African." They are aggressive to curb intrusion of chinese fabrics. They involve and befriend the International fashion media, espcially USA. They have their issues but they make a REAL effort and work together.

Nigeria = Cutting edge, evolving. Govt., in the form of former OBJ highly disfavored chinese imports and encouraged love for local fabrics. But awa Naija, we no go gree o! Naija designers more interested in silly feuds amongst themselves. No collective meaningful attempt at an industry. Individual and atimes organizations waste monies on extravagant fashion shows with no real return on investments, especially on an international front. More interested in joining someone else's gig, i.e. SA rather than developing its own industry.

Great we love ankaras and all the high fashions our tailors make for the owambe events. BUT, EDUCATION & AN INDUSTRY for tomorrow's Naija designers is essential. Involve, train and educate on every aspect of the inudstry. We need to BUILD NAIJA's FASHION industry. Create jobs for our women not a complete dependency, esp. among the young women on the 40 sumthin' or any man for that matter. Mo ti tire with hearing another young girl don become "Ashawo" bcos she no get money chop. Wetin! Wetin SA get wey Naija no get?

I live in SA & comparing 9ja with SA fashion industry/designers is what i do regularly. Ladybrille took the words right out of my mouth. 9ja's got so much talent,i mean our designers, but our fashion industry needs a wake up call.
I believe we've got so much to offer, way better than SA, but for now SA fashion is IT.
BTW, Why r outfits by 9ja designers so over priced? My fav SA designer is Stoned Cherie & believe me her outfits as creative&glam as they r, r affordable by the average Joe, compared with our Tiffany Ambers, Deola Sagoes & the rest of them that r so expensive.

Wow! absolutely stunning! beautiful colours, breath-taking designs, exotic print & fabric, a must-have-attire in the wardrobe.... I am seriously loving these guys.

Unlike internationally recognised designers such as Gucci, Prada etc whose collections are usually monotone, these guys incorporate all rules defined as well as undefined within the fashion industry. The setting is very captivating. I love the fact that they incorporated elements of African (a little bit from various cultures across the continent) culture into their work. Their work of is very interesting, unique, vibrant, energetic, perky & sassy. It if hard to come by these adjectives in other collections.

I tell you people, the motherland has a whole lot to offer. It’s a shame our ways of life is unappreciated beyond our borders. We deserve a lot more respect & recognition in the international media. Not the usual hungry children with tattered cloths and emaciated bodies which personifies every single child on the continent. ( sorry guys.. I’m getting too political)

And Bella naija, why would you even pose such a question to your audience? Is “Blokes & Diva’s collections anywhere close to these guys collections? Ahhh….20th century European designs with a little bit of Ankara thrown in…. that wasn’t working for me at all.

But I’m pretty sure there are creative designers (Nigerians) who have the capabilities of getting to where these guys have. Not to say that Nigerian designers are bad. However I do the believe the fashion industry is one of a competitive nature and as such the SA designes are more likely to fare well on the market than the Nigerian ones. ( My opinions are based on all Nigerian designers featured on your blog)

    Very Impressive darling!
