The cuts are simple yet extremely flattering.
The fabric is Ankara but dazzled up.

These are fashions we can afford and looks that can be attained without the help of overpaid makeup artists and Mario Testino. Amen O, amen. Jewel By Lisa...is fab! I saw a dress she made for Kemi Adetiba, and i almost died.

Her designs are good. I have heard of her from your previous blog and a friend telling me more about her. I think what I really like is her website. The photo shoot beautiful girls am sure but are they shooting a commercial for maltina or malta guinness or what…

ReplyDeleteAnjugrasay, your point is well taken. I, however, think the key thing is that it is a "ready-to-wear" line. To me, the silhouettes can be replica of what you see in a lot of publications so long as the quality and detailing is on point. Frankly, you can only cut clothes in so many ways. At some point, they have to be functional and pragmatic for the everyday woman, especially if it is a "ready-to wear" line. Also, the embellishment, maybe many are doing it in Naija but first time I am seeing it. It can be pretty tricky to embellish ankara since the fabric is already so busy. To me, to do it in a way that seems to find a balance is cool. I like what I see although I'll have to check it out when next I visit Naija to make sure the dresses do fit well and can embrace my curves!Yes o! I got curves. lol!

I liked the look she was going for until the shorts. I see those shorts everywhere. It's just that this time instead of seeing them in tweed, I see them in ankara. Don't get me wrong, I think she's got talent, in copying, but where's the originality. Like Ladybrille said, there are so many ways to cut a style, but if the designer wants to set herself apart, I believe she has to be bolder. The bikinis were hot. Nice touch, but the clothes, I would've expected something...more.

making the ankara look all patchy and using only ankara is too much, am like give me a choice on the prints.....

The models look great as far as i am concerned, i am sick of people always thinking someone is anorexic just because they are skinny, i mean cmon they are not even that skinny, not everyone is born FAT.

ReplyDeleteOkay as a designer I have to say JBL is revolutionary is its own right. Ankara already is an unexplored fabric I believe. People don't really go the extra mile when designing with it (which I think could be a problem ordinarily but not really in this case). Because since that's how Ankara is already used then JBL is fabulous! Because JBL has at least used the embellishments to take it a notch higher. Really she has... And I don't think the line is a high-fashion one, (which is okay. Hilfiger is not but he's one of the top designers of our generation). It's a ready-to-wear line that can make you look like a million bucks in a casual setting but not in a glamorous one... Long story short, JBL occupies its niche well. I totally dig it!

ReplyDeleteAs a designer of African fabrics, I simply take it that all of us (African fabric designers) are like artists who paint on different media. Some paint on canvass, others on walls, some also paint on paper etc....
Ankara, and some other Nigerian fabrics have been unexplored all these while. And when they are used, its usually the same ol' same ol' that a funky, stylish Nigerian in the diaspora would not even want to touch!
I applaud JBL for doing ready-to-wear. Its not custom-made, nor couture, so, give her a break. Ready-to-wears DONT have to be smug and tight on the body. Even dresses bought at Saks or Neiman Marcus would sometimes need to be taken in or out to fit buyer!
Good job JBL! Make people proud of our fabrics. And its the best way to go. I envy U sis! Cos it sure aint easy doing custom-made, I tell ya.
I am really looking forward to when our other fabrics would be brought to limelight!
I have experimented with the Gele head gears as dress and skirts and people love it! (Non-Africans especially).
